Professional Field Notes & Gotchas

  • Ultimate Protection: Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) provides the maximum possible protection for conductors and is effectively a grounding conductor in its own right per 250.118.
  • Corrosion Warning: While RMC is galvanized, threading the pipe exposes raw steel. Always use zinc-rich 'cold galv' spray or conductive corrosion protection on all threads.
  • Pulling Power: Because RMC is steel, it can withstand massive pulling tensions. It is the gold standard for high-voltage and heavy industrial feeder runs.
  • Grounding Path: Ensure all locknuts are seated firmly. A loose RMC fitting acts as a high-impedance break in your ground-fault path, which can prevent a breaker from tripping.

NEC 2023 vs 2026: What changed?

NEC 2023 vs 2026: Standardized threading requirements for RMC fittings were updated to Ensure consistent bonding across various manufacturers. Fill rates and dimensions remain unchanged.

Technical FAQs

What is the ground path of RMC?

RMC is an approved Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC). When installed with listed fittings and tightened properly, you may not need an additional green wire per NEC 250.118.

Can I use RMC in a coastline environment?

Yes, but special precautions are required for salt-air corrosion. Zinc-coated RMC holds up well, but PVC-coated RMC (Robroy) is the industry standard for extreme corrosion.

Is RMC better than EMT for fill?

RMC has a slightly different ID than EMT. For a 1" trade size, RMC has 0.355 in² of usable 40% area, while EMT has 0.346 in². RMC actually offers a tiny bit more room.
